Feature Shoot Interview

In an interview with Feature Shoot, Joshua Sariñana discusses his photographic series Surface and Consciousness, which transforms urban puddles into portals of reflection and altered perception. Drawing on his background in neuroscience, Sariñana explores the tension between the physical and psychological realms, using puddles as metaphors for consciousness and self-reflection.

The series originated during a difficult period in Sariñana’s life, marked by career uncertainty and personal stress. Walking through the streets of Cambridge, he began photographing reflections in puddles—fragments of distorted cityscapes that paralleled the interplay between reality and perception. Inspired by Sartre’s concept of consciousness as an act of reflection, Sariñana frames these images as surreal landscapes that challenge conventional notions of beauty in urban environments.

Through Surface and Consciousness, Sariñana invites viewers to reconsider their surroundings, suggesting that the mundane can become a gateway into an alternate, dreamlike reality.
