Loeil de la Photographie - Image of Structure

In April 2018, L’Œil de la Photographie featured Joshua Sariñana’s photographic series Image of Structure as a portfolio selection. This body of work examines the intersection of architecture, perception, and abstraction through photography, capturing the geometric complexity of built environments. By focusing on light, form, and spatial distortion, Sariñana explores how architectural structures influence cognition and visual processing.

Blending his background in neuroscience with photographic experimentation, Image of Structure investigates how the brain interprets patterns and depth in rigid yet dynamic architectural compositions. The series aligns with Sariñana’s broader artistic inquiry into the relationship between structure, memory, and perception.

Joshua Sariñana

Joshua Sariñana, PhD, obtained his degrees in neuroscience at the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed his doctoral thesis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Sariñana’s multi-disciplinary art projects bridge art, science, and media. He has received several grants for his art projects, exhibited his work nationally and internationally, and has received numerous awards for his photographic work.

He combines his science communications background with his neuroscience and art practice. Sariñana has provided his expertise to WIRED Magazine, MIT Technology Review, MIT News, and as an invited speaker for the Neurohumanities series at Trinity College in Dublin.
