Representation of Hidden Communication - Critical Mass Selection

Joshua Sariñana’s photographic series, Representation of Hidden Communication, has been selected for Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 200 Award, a prestigious recognition in contemporary photography. This series interrogates the often unseen processes of scientific discovery, highlighting the individuals and methodologies behind neuroscience research.

Captured with a manually operated large-format camera using experimental pull-apart instant film, the images mirror the structured yet interpretative nature of data acquisition in neuroscience. Each diptych—a raw, opaque positive paired with an inverted negative—symbolizes the transformation of complex, noisy data into refined insights about the brain. By visually dissecting the mechanisms of perception and knowledge creation, Sariñana invites viewers to reconsider how scientific narratives are constructed and communicated.
