Artist of the Month, Somerville Arts Council

Joshua Sariñana, PhD, December’s Artist of the Month, is a neuroscientist-turned-artist whose work bridges the gap between cognition, space, and visual storytelling. With a background in neuroscience research at MIT, where he studied brain networks and memory, Sariñana integrates scientific principles into his artistic practice. His photography explores the intersections of perception, representation, and spatial awareness, using tools such as film photography and artificial intelligence to visualize cognitive maps. As an active member of the Somerville arts community, he has contributed to socially engaged projects, including Through These Realities, and has exhibited work at the Nave Gallery. His journey from scientific inquiry to artistic exploration underscores his belief that creativity and research share fundamental processes—experimentation, vision, and storytelling. Through his work, Sariñana continues to connect artistic and scientific disciplines, creating new ways to visualize thought and identity.
